Join Macaroni Kid in Supporting a Local Mom Helping Kids

By Dr. Melissa Glasser-Caine November 25, 2015
Let me explain why I have chosen to run the 2016 New York City Marathon for the New York Road Runners charity Team for Kids.  Prior to my thyroid cancer diagnosis 2 years ago, I rarely exercised. To me, it was more of a chore, than anything else.  Shortly after my surgery and post-operative treatment, I vowed to remain in shape and I began to run.  This led quickly to a 4 mile race and soon progressed to my completion of a half marathon several weeks ago.  Through my training, it became clear that not only was I enjoying my progress, but I was making an incredible difference in my children's lives.  Michael, Max and Madyson no longer saw me as simply "mommy," but soon I became "the mom who can run for 13.1 miles straight."  It showed my children that regardless of your age, you can always accomplish whatever you set your mind to.  This motivation and excitement from my children, is what prompted me to initiate my fundraising campaign, in order to ultimately complete my first marathon next November.

As an obstetrician-gynecologist, there are many charities that are incredibly important to me, particularly those involving women's health.  However, as I stated, it is the push from my own children, that is leading me down this path.  As a result, I found this amazing charity for which I am fundraising and supporting wholeheartedly. Team for Kids assists over 200,000 students both locally and nationally through youth running programs, events and resources.  It promotes teamwork, confidence and dedication to health, for children and young adults; qualities which I instill in my own children and in my patients.  By running for Team for Kids, I aim to show my family and my medical practice, that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to, as long as you believe in yourself!

Thank you for your support and I appreciate your donation to this wonderful charity Team for Kids.
